Ferndale is on the way to the "Lost Coast" of California. Get off highway 101 at the Fernbridge exit, cruise past the Humboldt Cheese Factory, go thru town and out the back road... Over a mountain and you can get to a very remote coastal area... There are cattle ranches actually on the beach. It makes sense, half the expense for fencing is saved by using the Pacific Ocean. The road eventually ends up at the Avenue of the Giants after wandering thru the "Mateel" commune-ity... This area is a part of California that most people never get to.
