Idea Factory: Just before I go to sleep I say to myself, "I'm going to visit an ART GALLERY in my dreams and will look for good paintings to copy."  I repeat this many many times... When I awake, I quickly sketch any interesting designs.

This could be applied to any field... "Tonight in my dreams I'm going to read a good book and write down the Plot." or "Tonight in my dreams the marketing manager will give a speech about the new ad campaign and I'll be taking notes." Once you get down on paper the basic idea, then all you have to do is work, work, work to get it done...

Here is an example of the Idea Factory at work...

Do the Math: a silly story by gregvanderlaan.com

During the early 1970's a gentleman and his wife were working in Palo Alto, California and he discovered the key to enlightenment. He published it as a book and became a leader of a religious group very popular with the high tech crowd  surrounding Apple and HP. To put it briefly, the key is 01101011001110110100010001... and it went on like that for a hundred pages finally ending with the amazing conclusion that astonished the world and allowed the couple to earn a million dollars from royalties... 11010011100001110101100110.

A few years passed and the wife made a public statement: "While my husband is a fine fellow and a wonderful father to our children, I sadly must inform you that he is almost entirely wrong about the key to enlightenment. I have been doing the math and can state that there is a missing part... it is:10010100110001001011101110... and it went on like that for a hundred pages finally ending with the amazing conclusion that astonished the world and allowed the couple to earn another million dollars from royalties... 00101100011110001010011001.

And the people of the world did the math... and she was right... while each of the strings of zeros and ones by themselves showed part of the key to true enlightenment, if you add the two numbers together, they equal:1111111111111111111111111.... and it goes on for a hundred pages finally ending as you would expect... 111111111111111111111111111.

Idea Factory at work: This joke came to me pre-written in a dream, all I did was type it into the computer before I forgot it... Yes, it was slightly different in the dream, more visual. They took the number over to RSA Associates and asked them to study it. When plotted on a rectangular grid 3.5 inches wide by 2 inches tall the numbers form a labyrinth in the shape of an eye... the gentleman had the eye printed on business cards... with a one printed as a black dot and the zero printed as a white space... then years later, the wife had similar cards printed on mylar with the one printed as a white dot and the zero printed as a clear space... when you overlay her card on his they form a totally white image... but just before the image whites out, the eye appears to wink at you... as if it was laughing along with you enjoying a private joke.

Well, here is that joke.
"There are 10 types of people in the world, those that read binary and those that don't."

I just awoke with an image of a branding iron in the shape of a side view of a human head with the word profile made out of rebar inside of the outline...

Here is a drawing of what it would look like...

on the other hand... most of my art is done by fiddling with distort filters in photoshop until I see a shape that I recognise... in this example, the blue and black pentagon reminds me of looking down on a city... like, high rise apartment buildings in New York...

This image came to me in a dream...

a giant tropical fish swimming in thru a doorway...

Storage in standard auto batteries.

Elevator one way trip down. A quick drop to lower floor while loaded with a person moves an empty platform to top floor.

At HSU Founders hall,  a thousand students walk up AND down staircase to class. Some would select to ride platform down allowing energy to be captured.

Here is a dream I had... could be part of a science fiction story.

We were standing in a long line waiting to pay at the cashier and

then proceed with the buffet dinner.
Someone saw a servant robot and asked them for a cup of coffee while

we wait. Soon the robot
provided coffee and then someone else asked for a sandwich... pretty soon

we were all being served
by robots and we failed to pay at the cashier. The robots were

comfortable with this because they
were programmed to do a specific job and the servers didn't have

any interest about cash collection.

This all took place at a giant student housing apartment in San Jose.

 I remember that they had
modified the garden sprinkler systems by attaching a fifty cent

coin to the top of the pipe so the
water would hit the coin, splash off and be distributed over the lawn uniformly. I stole about a
hundred fifty cent pieces... good money! I bet they replace them

with more fifty cent pieces because
the design and manufacture of a custom water diffusion piece

would cost about five dollars... This
could turn out to be a major source of income for me.

THE GOLDEN SPOON OF MONTEZUMA... When Cortez arrived in Mexico, he was interested in GOLD. He also wanted to impress the people he met with how rich and powerful his KING was. He told an Indian that his King was so rich that he used a golden spoon for EVERY meal and then discarded it after he was done. His King was so rich that he could afford to THROW AWAY gold. The Indian was not impressed. The indian said that HIS King was so rich that he could afford to use a NEW GOLDEN SPOON for EVERY BITE! How was this possible? Well, Montezuma used TORTILLAS for a spoon. He would scoop up his food using a tortilla chip (golden spoon) and so he used a new "golden spoon" for each bite. I love telling this story when I'M eating Mexican food at a restaurant.
