Marathon on the Avenue of the Giants. 30th annual benefit for Lukemia and Lymphoma.
Participants may choose a full 26 miles or 13... many people walk it. This year it was sunny and warm. Link to official website. Big turnout for this event... fun for the whole family
View of the race course near the end... Half marathon runners and walkers.
This is the bridge that the 26 mile marathoners ran over near the finish line... One advantage to this race is that it is generally level because the course parallels the south fork of the EEL river... A few miles downstream the north fork joins and the water becomes muddy... but here, it is pretty... eventually the Van Duzen joins near Fortuna and then it enters the sea near Ferndale...
Walkers in the redwoods. Since this race has many different levels of difficulty, there is room for all. These people have selected a 13 mile walk... Actually, a walk in the woods sounds like fun ! I would never run for 26 miles unless I was being chased by a bear.
Parking for the marathon... sometimes this sandbar is under water but the main spring flooding had not started yet... In the distance you can see the fork in the river...
